Suggestion Therapy

Suggestion is everywhere.....
A suggestion is an idea that is offered and accepted without argument. The art of suggestion is being used around us all of the time...the most obvious being advertising. Posters or adverts in magazines involve (usually) pleasing images or ideas that induce positive emotions in us, making us more likely to choose that product when shopping.

A suggestion is simply that...a suggestion. Nobody is MAKING us do something, but a good suggestion can change the way that we think and feel about things. For example, we may have an idea about a movie that we don't want to see, but because a friend says it's brilliant, and SUGGESTS that we see it, we change our behaviour and go to the film.

...and as a therapy
Suggestion therapy is perhaps the kind which most people associate with Hypnotherapists. The aim is very simple. Once in a relaxed state, your mind is given some positive suggestions.  These are accepted by your subconscious and will then be acted upon in the coming days and weeks.  It is a very relaxing and pleasant therapy, made all the more so by the fact that your therapist is doing all the work!

The therapy can be very helpful for minor problems, and for changing habit formation, but it is important that you have a full history taken to ensure that it is suitable for you.  For more ''major' problems the use of suggestion therapy may do little more than provide, as it were, a 'sticking plaster' over the wound.  In other words you may be relieved of your current symptom or habit, but find that it manifests itself in another form. This is because the originating cause has not been addressed.

When we use it
It should be noted that suggestion therapy is not suitable for the more deeply rooted psychological issues such as phobias, eating disorders, panic attacks, depression etc. Problems such as these are not just ‘habits’ that a person has fallen into. They have a definite subconscious cause.

However, suggestion therapy is often suitable for helping to cope with such things as examination fears, unhealthy eating habits, driving test nerves, performance enhancement and confidence boosting. We also use suggestion in smoking cessation, but in combination with cognitive and belief system work.
