Sexual Difficulties
One of the most distressing kinds of problem we are asked
to help with is where a person cannot function sexually as they
would wish. These problems can have a detrimental effect on
relationships, are destructive of self-esteem, and reduce the
capacity for a happy life.
It is estimated that three quarters of sexual difficulties are
of psychological origin. The best strategy is to first check
for physiological causes by consulting a medical practitioner.
If the cause is found not to be physical, it is then reasonable
to approach the problem using some form of psychotherapy. Counselling
can be effective, and particularly so hypnoanalysis. Therapy
involving drugs, however, is best avoided.
There are several kinds of sexual difficulty that we can offer
help with:
· Inability to reach orgasm
· Vaginismus (vaginal spasm) in women
· Anxiety around gender identity
· Premature ejaculation in men
· Sex addiction
Our approach to these difficulties is open but sensitive. We
do not judge you in any way whatsoever, and after years in practice,
we are way beyond being shockable. There are often issues of
confidence bound up with this area, and we often have to tell
people that they are really not as weird as they think!
The truth is that many of these difficulties can be overcome
with a measure of courage and honesty, if you really want to
do so. |
