Psychoanalysis
Many of us have problems that prevent us from living life to the full, and many of these problems arose from difficult and painful experiences in childhood that led us to feel inadequate, afraid or unloved. They may come from a single event or an accumulation of minor ones. If it were merely a case of having felt these things then, there would be no great problem, but the effects can be felt through into adult life, influencing the way we feel and act in unexpected ways. Many of the problems that stand in the way of our happiness and cramp our abilities are caused by feelings that are a hangover from our early days. They are actually irrelevant to today's conditions, but they still manage to distort the way we live, presenting themselves as emotional, behavioural and physical symptoms. |
| There are processes at work here that were created long ago to protect us, but no longer serve us. The thing that makes it difficult to get rid of these feelings is the fact that they reside in the subconscious part of our mind, and it is impossible to evaluate or resolve something when we are not sure exactly what it is or how it came to be there. When we regain a conscious memory of a key event, we need to face the emotions that were connected with it, but having done so, we gain clarity and symptoms disappear. Our task, therefore, is to bring these experiences into the light of day, and we have several methods of doing this. |
Free Association is a method whereby the client is encouraged to continually talk about the first thing that comes into his mind. One past experience will trigger the memory of another, opening up material that may not have been thought about for a long time. Memories long buried may also come up, and this is where understanding can dawn and issues can be re-evaluated and discarded. Free Association is very suitable for clients who have several distinct problems.
Age Regression is a method whereby the therapist guides the client back through numerous past events looking for the event that caused the problem. This is useful where there is a single problem that needs to be resolved. |
Hypnosis (read more) can be used in conjunction with either Free Association or Age Regression, the advantage being that when the client is in a light hypnotic trance, memories flow better and the mental editing processes do not get in the way so much. However, both can be carried out without hypnosis, often advisable if the client is afraid of hypnosis or epileptic.
